"Ephemeral" Lake

Image courtesy EROS/USGS/NASAPatches of southern Australia's shallow Lake Eyre seem to form a grimacing face in an August 2006 satellite picture.When seasonal rains are plentiful, the water body is Australia's largest lake, according to the USGS. But it's also an "ephemeral" feature in a dry land: The lake has only filled three times during the past 150 years, the USGS noted.Agency scientists selected the Earth as Art 3 pictures—which include cloud formations, coastlines, mountains, islands, deltas, glaciers, and rivers—solely for their aesthetic appeal.

Caribbean Colors

The U.K.-administered Turks and Caicos Islands in the northern Caribbean (map) create a scene of abstract beauty in a false-color satellite picture taken by the NASA/USGS Landsat 7 orbiter. The shot is part of a set of Landsat 7 images released Tuesday called the Earth as Art 3 collection. (See more Earth as Art 3 pictures.)
As seen in the picture, the islands (red) lie primarily along the northern edge of the submerged Caicos Bank (turquoise). The bank is a shallow platform made of limestone, sand, algae, and coral reefs that covers 2,370 square miles (6,140 square kilometers).

"Van Gogh" Algae

In the style of Van Gogh's "Starry Night," massive congregations of greenish phytoplankton swirl in dark water around Sweden's Gotland (see map) island in a satellite picture released this week by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The image of the Baltic Sea island is 1 of 40 in the new Earth as Art 3 collection, the latest compilation of Landsat pictures chosen for their artistic quality.
"The collected images are authentic and original in the truest sense," Matt Larsen, the USGS's associate director for Climate and Land Use Change, said in a statement. "These magnificently engaging portraits of Earth encourage us all to learn more about our complex world."
Population explosions, or blooms, of phytoplankton, like the one shown here, occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters, fueling the growth and reproduction of these tiny plants, according to the USGS.

Sinewy Delta

Like branching blood vessels, the Yukon Delta's sinuous waterways empty into the Bering Sea in a 2002 satellite picture.
The Earth-observing Landsat satellites—jointly managed by NASA and the USGS—sense light in bands of red, green, blue, and infrared. According to the USGS, when the colors are combined into a single image, "fascinating patterns, colors, and shapes emerge"—as in this Yukon Delta picture.
The Yukon River—which begins in the Canadian province of British Columbia and crosses through the Yukon Territory and Alaska—was protected in 2010 as part of the United States' new Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge.

Greasy Ice "Galaxies"

Resembling distant galaxies amid clouds of interstellar dust, chunks of sea ice drift through swirls of grease ice near Canada's Baffin Island (see map) in 2002.
Sea ice often begins as grease ice, a soupy slick of tiny ice crystals on the ocean's surface, according to the USGS. As the temperature drops, grease ice thickens and coalesces into solid ice slabs.

"Startling" Trench

What looks like red paint is actually a "remarkable interplay of light and cloud" captured in 2004 in the Canadian Rockies, according to the USGS.
Low clouds filled a part of the Rocky Mountain Trench, which sits near the border between the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. Light reflecting off the clouds, coupled with low sun elevation, "resulted in this startling effect," the USGS noted.

Meandering Mississippi

Overall, the Earth as Art collections provide "fresh and inspiring glimpses of different parts of our planet's complex surface," according to the USGS.

Glimmering Crater

Tin Bider, an ancient and eroded meteor crater in the Algerian Sahara, glimmers in a 2009 picture. Nearly 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) wide, the crater was caused by a meteorite impact in this region of northern Africa roughly 70 million years ago.

"Stunning" Ice Shapes

In one of the new Earth as Art 3 satellite pictures, a complex "circuitry" of Greenland fjords among red-tinted mountains ease the flow of glacial ice into the Atlantic Ocean in 2001. (See a Greenland map).
When temperatures rise in the summer, newly calved icebergs here join slabs of sea ice and older, weathered icebergs in an offshore slurry that sometimes "swirls into stunning shapes" (above, right)—according to the USGS.

Giant Sand Sea

Earth's largest "sand sea," Rub' Al Khali is striped with lines of wind-sculpted sand, which, in the above picture, are interrupted by a highland ridge. (See related aerial pictures of mysterious patterns in nature.)
The Earth as Art 3 collection follows the Earth as Art 1 and Earth as Art 2 exhibitions, which have been shown in Washington, D.C.'s Library of Congress and in museums and art centers throughout the U.S.

"Extreme" Salt Desert

Like poster paints run wild, a 2003 image captures an "eclectic montage" of landscapes in Iran's largest desert, the Dasht-e Kavir, or Great Salt Desert, according to the USGS.
The mostly uninhabited region—a mix of dry streambeds, desert plateaus, mud flats, and salt marshes—covers an area of more than 29,730 square miles (77,000 square kilometers). (See more pictures of desert landscapes.)
"Extreme heat, dramatic daily temperature swings, and violent storms are the norm in this inhospitable place," the USGS said.

Behold! Aurora Australis…the Southern Lights…

During a night pass this week over the southern Indian Ocean, we were greeted with a magnificent moonlit Aurora light show out over Antarctica . dancing across the sacred moonlit night. “…and I think to myself…what a wonderful world…”

On this sacred night, when the aurora looked like rain, I reflected back on my childhood dreams of flying a spaceship through the infinite expanse of space... to be among the mosaic of billions of stars, and visit other worlds. Now as I look from space at our planet I realize that had I been born and spent my childhood here in space... how much greater and more vivid my dreams would have been to visit this blue planet.

The approaching dawn... the aurora borealis... the cities awakening to a new day collide to make this masterpiece. "And, while with silent lifting mind I've trodthe high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God."

Just a little further to the east, we spotted sacred and majestic 'Uluru'. You may recognize it by its more popular name of 'Ayers Rock'. I have never had the opportunity to visit Australia, but one glorious day, I hope to be standing amazed beside this natural wonder. Can't wait to read your thoughts of 'Uluru'.

Maybe these aren’t ‘mystery’ locations, since you guys are so brilliant with your Geography! Well done! This is Mount Vesuvius in Italy, the volcano that buried the port city of Pompeii in 79 AD. The last eruption of this sleeping giant was March 1944. Okay…let’s see what you know about this snow and glacier covered masterpiece, and its unique distinction. Madagascar

Where natural beauty and human recklessness collide in a big way.

Madagascar is so beautiful and so unique, but seeing the streams choked with silt as a result of inland deforestation really saddens me. I hope things can turn around there and future generations will be able to experience this place. Have you been there? What is it like?

The Hawaiian Island chain stretches across 1500 miles of the vast Pacific Ocean, and the archipelago is made up of 137 islands, of which only 7 are inhabited. The attached twitpic shows those islands as well as one that is uninhabited.

The Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian Far East is a breathtaking display of the majesty of pristine wilderness. Seeing these active volcanoes and the vast forests breathes life into your soul, much like the beauty of Patagonia. I dream of visiting Kamchatka one day.

The Florida peninsula and the southeastern U.S. on the kind of evening that I miss most about our planet. A clear autumn night with moonlight over the water and the sky filled with a billion stars.

This is indeed a priceless masterpiece, but not painted by human hands. If I could travel in time, I would love to meet one of the great Impressionists and share this picture... and listen to their thoughts. Back by request... you likely won’t need any hints to guess this 'mystery location'

A clear starry night over the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea . Ancient lands with thousands of years of history stretching from Athens, Greece all the way around the Med to Cairo, Egypt. Storied lands, fabled cities, and alluring islands... Athens - Crete - Rhodes - Izmir - Ankara - Cyprus - Damascus - Beirut - Haifa - Amman - Tel Aviv - Jerusalem - Cairo are beacons on this cool November night. Grace and Peace from the sanctity of space...

Europe on a cool autumn night. The Mediterranean Riviera and beautiful mosaic along the coastline from Valencia, Spain to Livorno, Italy and all the magical places in between. Can you see Monte Carlo? How about Pisa, Italy? Barcelona, Spain? Or, maybe you can find Andorra nestled in the Pyrenees mountains... or have memories of one of the islands...

As requested.. Ireland at Night. Sorry for the problems with 'ping' ...now back with 'twitpic'. This was a beautiful night pass over the Emerald Isle ...a little foggy, but otherwise a clear night. The mystery Cape in my previous twitpic is Cape Bridgewater on the southern coast of Australia.

Aurora Borealis in the distance on this beautiful night over Europe. The Strait of Dover is pretty clear as is Paris, the City of Lights. A little fog over the western part of England and London. It is incredible to see the lights of the cities and small towns against the backdrop of deep space. I am going to miss this view of our wonderful world...

The 'mystery island' in my recent tweet is Isle Juan de Nova in the Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and the African mainland. The beautiful colors rival the amazing places in the Caribbean, like the islands in this photo. Hint: This photo was taken only 2 minutes after the photo in my previous tweet of the Caribbean City.

The Earth at night, when viewed from space, is a beautiful mosaic of light that stirs the imagination. Landscape - water - climate - coastline - technology - accessibility, all defining the brilliant fingerprints and patchwork of lights that mark our presence on the planet. . Aurora Borealis as I will forever paint it in my dreams. Almost time to return home... no regrets... but mixed emotions.

Mt. Fuji towering over the beautiful autumn landscape near Tokyo. Captured this photo for my friend Nara-san and our training team in Tsukuba, Japan. You are right here with us in spirit. Seeing the majesty of Mt. Fuji from space is a profoundly emotional moment…flooded with great memories of our time together. It seems that time slips by so quickly like sand through an hourglass.

Morning breaking over the majestic Andes in South America . I really am not sure of the name of this mountain…just was in awe of its majesty, reaching into the windswept heights and the rising sun. Another day... another chance to stand tall and be counted.

Such a stark contrast between the dark desolate lifeless desert of northern Africa and the Nile River teeming with life along its shores.
